The Saint Leonard's Society of Nova Scotia is a not-for-profit, charitable organization responsible for the operation of two distinct types of facilities for individuals who are in transition, Homeless Shelters and Community Residential Facilities (CRF's) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Our Community Residential Facilities are: Sir Sanford Fleming House (for men) and Nehiley House (for women).
CRF's are sometimes known as Halfway Houses. A CRF or halfway house, is a community residential facility for offenders who are reintegrating into the community after having been sentenced to a term of incarceration, and are now serving a portion of their sentence while reintegrating under supervision into the community.
Sir Sanford Fleming House and Nehiley House staff members provide supervision, general counseling and assistance to offenders as well as individualized Case Planning and Management. Many of our residents live in our facilities while they work, seek employment, pursue academics, and attend treatment or other appropriate programming.
Our CRF's are operated by SLSNS, a private, non-governmental, not-for-profit charitable organization who works collaboratively with and receives funding from Correctional Services of Canada.
There are currently approximately 175 halfway houses in Canada with approximately 13 located in Atlantic Canada. SLSNS is a proud member of the Atlantic Halfway House Association (AHHA) who work with other similar service providers to meet goals with regards to advocacy, education, acceptance, service provision, and safety at the forefront of their efforts as a part of the corrections continuum.
