Barry HouseOperated by Saint Leonard’s Society of Nova Scotia, Barry House is a 20 bed shelter for Women who are 16 years of age and older, and their Children (where applicable) who are experiencing homelessness. Barry House operates with a harm reduction philosophy. We also endeavour to provide shelter to women accessing shelter with their domestic pet (ie, cat/dog).
Our History:
Since our program’s inception on April 11, 2001, Barry House has provided emergency shelter and support to Women and Children who are experiencing homelessness. Barry House was originally established on Brunswick Street and relocated to 2706 Gottingen Street on August 5th, 2006. We were thrilled to move into a larger, beautiful house. At that time, the house could accommodate 14 women.
Gottingen Street:
As a community shelter, we had operated 365 days a year and 24 hours a day since we first opened our doors, until just after midnight on May 16, 2008. Just after midnight, there was a fire at Barry House. Thankfully, everyone at Barry House was safely evacuated; however, the house was destroyed. Unfortunately, the fire, subsequent investigation, and profound damages caused the temporary suspension of all of our services at Barry House for 10 weeks. During that time we endeavoured to quickly retain a satellite location in order to re-commenced service delivery.
Wellington Street; Our Temporary Home Away From Home:
After securing a rental property, we were so pleased to be welcomed by our neighbours and to recommence our services on Wellington Street from July 26’08. We operated with huge success on Wellington Street for 11 months while our renovations were being completed at our Gottingen House. In November '08, we were excited to able to increase our services to accommodate 20 Women and Children and also, their pets (where applicable).
We’re Home Again:
On June 27, 2009 we finally moved home. We are now operating again in our gorgeous, newly renovated house, located at 2706 Gottingen Street. We have been committed to overcoming challenges and we appreciate continued support in accomplishing this goal.
